Guides

Know what you are choosing

The four grades on every certificate, how to find a ring size at home, and how to keep a diamond bright.

Every certified diamond is graded on four things. Here is what each grade means, and what you can actually see.

01 · Carat

Weight, not size

One carat is 0.2 grams. A heavier stone is larger, but the shape changes how big it looks from above: a 1 ct oval or marquise looks bigger than a 1 ct round, because more of its weight is spread across the top.

The sizes here are typical for well-cut stones. Every report gives your stone's exact millimetres.

Size grows more slowly than weight: a 2 ct round is only about 26% wider than a 1 ct.

02 · Colour

How white it is

White diamonds are graded from D, no colour at all, down the alphabet as a faint warmth appears.

D, E, F are colourless. G, H are near colourless and look white to almost everyone once set: the best value. I, J show a slight warmth in white metal, and look white in yellow or rose gold.

Laboratories grade colour from the side, where it shows most. From the top, sparkle hides much of it.

03 · Clarity

What is inside

Most diamonds hold tiny natural marks called inclusions: crystals, feathers and pinpoints sealed in as the stone formed. Clarity grades how many there are and how easily an expert sees them at 10× magnification.

From VS2 upward, stones are almost always clean to the naked eye. SI stones can be too; ask us and we will check yours under the loupe on a video call.

04 · Cut

Where the sparkle comes from

Cut is the quality of the angles and finish. In a well-cut stone, light enters the top, reflects off the lower facets and comes back out to your eye. Cut too shallow or too deep, it leaks out of the bottom and the stone looks dull or dark in the middle.

Round brilliants get a cut grade: Excellent (GIA) or Ideal / Excellent (IGI) is the top. Other shapes are judged on polish and symmetry; ask for Excellent or Very Good in both.

Indian ring sizes, from your own ring or your finger. When you order, send us the millimetres too: sizes differ slightly between jewellers, millimetres never do.

1

From a ring that fits

Lay the ring on a ruler and measure the inside edge to edge, across the widest point, in millimetres.

2

From your finger

Wrap a thin strip of paper or a thread around the base of the finger, snug but able to slide over the knuckle. Mark where it meets, lay it flat and measure.

Mind the knuckleIf your knuckle is wide, measure there too and choose a size between the two.

Indian sizes follow the common jewellers' chart. Sizes can differ by about half a size between jewellers.

Clean gently

Soak for 20 minutes in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid. Brush softly behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Store apart

Diamond is hard enough to scratch other jewellery, and other diamonds. Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or compartment.

Take it off

Remove rings for gym work, gardening and heavy lifting, and before swimming pools or cleaning products: chlorine and bleach can weaken gold.

Check once a year

Have a jeweller look at the claws and setting once a year so the stone stays secure. For an Airo piece, ask us.
